Blindfold Immersion Training – ‘a Counselor’s introduction to the field of Blind & Visual Impairment Services’ (BVIS) at Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC)

Four of us (Lauren – a BVIS Rehab Teacher, Me – a BVIS Brain Injury Team Member , Sandra – a BVIS Administrator, & Priscilla – a BVIS Case Manager), are asked to consider these questions during a specialized two-week training course held at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center (CCRC) in Austin, Texas where adult and college-prep students having (or acquiring) visual impairment conditions learn to overcome barriers to functioning.

Named in honor of Texas Judge and Senator Criss Cole, whom after losing his sight while serving in the Marine Corps during World War II became a strong legislative supporter of Persons With Disabilities (PWD’s), he transformed this historic State Commission for the Blind program into into one addressing differing individual needs by providing courses including; a) Daily Living Skills (DLS), b) Orientation Orientation & Mobility (O&M), Information Technology (IT), c) Vocational Rehabilitation Career Guidance (VR), d) Industrial Arts (IA), c) Counseling Services, d) Medical Condition education, e) Independent Living (IL), e) Job Skills / Work Readiness preparation, f) Recreation, and g) More (such as college-prep, deaf-blind training, social events / community participation, especially Symposium, where all have a chance to voice opinions in a respectful forum).

These courses and programs may be customized into three general categories that legally blind CCRC students in the State of Texas may choose from: I – the Confidence Building Training Program, II – the Proficiency Focus Training Program or, III – the Career Focus Training Program.

Confidence building is #1 because when losing vision, the ‘loss’ may be replaced with ‘gain’ of self-direction, of being able to obtain information to make realistic choice, and of being able to overcome fears of unseen things, such as screeching vibrations of a screaming power-saw, biting viciously into measured wood just inches away from nervously-grasping fingers.

Also part of building confidence; safety is #1 in the IA Shop, where the actual Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety meetings given by the instructors are taken extremely seriously by participants before attempting any activity involving workplace hazards with potential risks, which are listened-to a little more carefully than one could previously imagine before experiencing this training.

While confidence may be the single most important component of adjustment to blindness; program #2 trains people to become proficient at obtaining skills enhancing quality of life while obtaining skills to master independent living, alternative non-visual techniques, also encouraging participation in structured activities to gain practical experience in the community like that offered by the Work Internship & Networking Program (WIN) .

Although operating computers and hand-held devices using voice, touch, and sound is a premium skill taught; being able to identify ingredients then measure them, to crack eggs, to keep pan centered on burner, to use spatula, to determine when finished by smell with sizzle, to dress the bun, to set the table, and to clean a kitchen being aware of potential germs, insects, and poison is a typical part of every proficient burger chef’s life, whether sighted or not, because tasting is sweet (or sour or salty) if not raw?

Going to work is the essence of #3, the career focus training program at CCRC, where ‘the rubber meets the road’ which may be crossed or traveled-down during academic training, on the job employee training, even executive training such as that provided by Business Enterprise of Texas (BET) which offers managerial or entrepreneurial training to those demonstrating advanced initiative and problem-solving abilities.

Criss Cole symbolizes the leadership potential of all people with blindness and visual impairment, a message expressed by the CCRC Philosophy: “Persons who are blind have the right to actively participate in employment, community and society. We are committed to providing assessment and training services for each individual in a manner that promotes the integration of basic blindness skills into everyday life. We will actively support and encourage consumers as they strive to achieve competence and confidence in reaching their work and independent living goals.”

Perpetual Positive Dreams

First; let me say thank to all the Magic The Gathering Nerds at Brickhouse Games for being kind to me, offering me an appreciated gift of social acceptance, despite my weirdness:  Good Games Y’all..! 

This morning awakening from a bad dream; in the dream, not quite a nightmare, it felt as if my approach to discussing the idea of having green lights on the back of vehicles was begging / pleading.

  Nobody would hear me out.  It seems that almost everyone whom I have discussed the idea has outright rejected it.  Seeing the numerous weak ideas for research that many people have had funded for various PhD dissertations which have been accepted in peer review for publication; it make me wonder why this MARSS idea is outright rejected by almost all?  Being such a long-winded topic, it is within my purview to just shut-up about it, yet beyond my power to keep it bottled-up inside, therefore: ‘o-boy – here we go again…’

Now at 50 years old; this website was created on my birthday to allow me to express this idea in a way that will attempt to reach somebody that cares, that listens with and open mind, and will join with me in making this dream come true.  However, it has served to bring back over 30 years of rejection which is difficult to explain, yet I must try.

My professors were polite in rejecting it as a Master’s Degree Thesis, explaining that it is: ‘too big.’  There explained that in the academic realm, a thesis must be provable by empirical scientific data, and must serve some sort of need for furthering and/or building on other established ideas, with this one having too many factors which were off topic for a specific academic discipline, such as behavioral, psychological, social, legal, technological, economic, or political, with this concept too ill-defined to fit into one genre, crossing-over into all of them.

Common fold rejected mainly in one idea, explaining there are so many people out there that are smarted that me who would have already thought of this, that it is simply a pipe dream.  Many more have taken it in a very negative way, feeling insulted that someone like me would think to be smarter than those well-educated people capable of brilliant ideas.  This is not wrong, as it has already been established with an official acronym, Multicolored Auxiliary Rears Signalling Systems (MARSS), and has already been make legal to use for protecting yourself from rear-end collisions in three states; Oregon, Idaho, and Washington State.  Yet it has been extremely difficult to document this.

Many more rejected it explaining it will confuse people, and cause accidents because when they see a green light turn on to indicate someone is in the act of acceleration; drivers will just take off, running into the rear of other.  Some rejected it because they felt it would give police the ability to see down the line ahead of them who is speeding.  Other simply said it is a stupid idea because the world is already the way it is due to the best ideas having already competed, with the most practical having already been proven.

The fact is that I have found other people who have proposed the idea, and all of them have been rejected.  There is even a patent for one person that designed on for this very use, with the patent accepted.  There are already electric marquee devices readily available to mount in rear windows of vehicles which allow drivers to scroll messages in plain words like, “please don’t follow so closely?’  With so much negativity built-up over the years, it has been necessary to go-on paying the bills and go-on spending my time fulfilling responsibilities, so the idea just seems to keep getting pushed-back in my list of everyday priorities, until now, my last attempt in establishing it in a public forum, The Internet. 

The idea has already been explored as a proposal to make driving safer by The Department of Transportation / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration types of workers that rejected it without research who simply funneled public money into giant electric marquee billboard-type signs that can warn of slow traffic ahead, remind people not to drink and drive, as well as give other useful messages to drivers when approaching certain critical locations on the highways.  When my computer used in college was stolen during a house burglary while attending LSU for my Bachelor’s; the bulk or organized documentation was lost, but in a due time, can be replaced, some of the writing having been backed-up on a storage device…

Despite having this idea rejected, ridiculed, and dismissed, it will not go away as long as I am alive and am able to continue to espouse it, keeping alive the desire to explore it in a way that can meet the all standards my professors laid-out to me.  Therefore, each of the ways of studying it scientifically may be explored, across each of the disciplines and genres they described. 

*Each of the people having expressed the same ideas, or the people whom I am wrong about and actually do believe in the idea, waning to join with me in advocating for it’s implementation will be invited to join the project, or will be asked to allowed me to join their project.  The other people sharing the idea will be asked for permission to use their writings, their artwork, their patents, and their stories of having it rejected to work together in continuing to promote it and to keep it alive, able to be passed down to the next generation of thinkers that my have less opposition to it in the future.

However, while still alive and capable of finding a way to obtain grant funding to complete a PhD study of my own to prove it’s worth; my attempts to fully establish this idea will continue.  Even though the social consequences of maintaining this position has been harsh, with the majority of people that took time to listen calling me a dreamer and a fool; it is simply too important to let go of now, after having dreamed this lonely dream for over 30 years…

Idea: Green Tail Lights For Accelerating Cars

This is an old idea of mine, but I’m writing about it now before self-driving cars take over and it won’t make any sense.

The idea is simple: add green lights to the array of tail lights in cars. When the car accelerates, the green lights will light up the same way red lights work when it decelerates.

“You must be crazy!” I hear you say. “This will just make everyone drive faster! Don’t we have enough accidents already?! ” But consider this: while the green lights signal to the driver behind you that you are accelerating, the lack of them signals that you are decelerating. And the advantages of having this information, I think, may outweigh the disadvantages of having the green lights on.

This is something we can experiment with, the same way they experimented in different countries with countdown timers for traffic lights. And this one is just about the Chinese traffic light experiment. In other countries the effect was different, so there really isn’t one answer whether this kind of an idea is good or bad – it depends on the driving culture per-country.

UPDATE: According to Wikipedia “Some jurisdictions, such as the US states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, permit vehicles to be equipped with auxiliary rear signal systems displaying green light when the accelerator is depressed, yellow light when the vehicle is coasting, and red light when the brake is depressed. Such systems have in the past been sold as aftermarket accessories, but are today seldom seen in traffic.”

As a survivor of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), my subsequent rehabilitation after surviving a coma has allowed my reaching of the Master’s Degree level of education, currently in progress at Southern A&M University under Dr. Madan Kundu in the Department of Disability Studies. Needing access to a pilot-study session, my brain activity needs to be recorded in real-time Functional MRI, while interacting with two separate but parallel computer algorithms of simulated high-speed with low visibility driving conditions, as stimulus to the brain which will show conclusive evidence needed to complete Thesis research about improving Intra-vehicular communication for people with disabilities (TBI and several others) proposing ‘reaction’ to video of green, amber, and red running lights on the backs of motor vehicles (Alternative Ha) to positively denote positive and negative changes in speed awareness, compared to ‘red-only’ (Null Ho) for study, as bio-mechanical neural trace evidence.
    The WHO is currently studying the occurring TBI disability consequences as a result of traffic collisions at high speeds, during low-visibility. We need to study this in the USA as well. This pilot-study will support my Hypothesis. After this research, the feasibility of changing from dull/bright red-only running-lights on the backs of all vehicles to a system of congruence with the 3-color system currently only used for intersection signaling can be explored. This is an important pioneering effort to begin this process for establishing empirical evidence. The idea was mine alone, dating back to the 1980s in its evolution to addressing this problem of,” What does a ‘red’ light on the back of a vehicle communicate to the next vehicle in traffic? NOTHING… A car can be going 100 mph or be stopped, and it will still be bright or dull red. We need running-lights on vehicles to match the red/yellow/green system of intersection signal lights, in an exact form, to reduce Traumatic Brain Injury.” But now, three States (Washington, Idaho, and Oregon) allow for multicolor auxiliary lighting systems identical to what I am proposing in my thesis.
    Can you send me contact information for the correct department for research? As a Master’s Degree student at Southern A&M University, it is necessary for me to obtain accurate research on NTSB Policy on preventing Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) due to multiple-vehicular rear end collisions during high-speed low-visibility driving conditions. Three States, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, allow for green lamps to function as rear signals when the accelerator is depressed. All licensed drivers with disabilities (like myself, with TBI) need this communication access to overcome reaction-time deficits. My thesis will propose this (addition of Green as effective communication)as an assistive technology for universal adoption for all licensed vehicles in the future. 1.0 PROBLEM: CONGRUENCE BETWEEN TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND INTER-VEHICULAR COMMUNICATION; A NEED FOR: Multicolor Auxiliary Rear Signal Systems (MARSS) as: Access for Drivers with Disabilities

  2. Have had this idea going around in my head for a while. Being a Civil Engineer, and real estate appraiser, i’m just frowned upon when bringing this subject up.
    Decided to look into the subject now an It took me less than a minute to find this website.

    One thing I thought, is that the LED tail light should be green when accelerating, blink in green when starting to let go of the gas pedal, yellow when coasting and red when braking.

    A lot of accident could be prevented, also the average mileage of cars would increase if everyone started to use less of the break an gas pedal, by knowing exactly when the car in front is coasting.

    Just an opinion.

  3. I agree that it could help, and obviously you put more thought to this than I did 🙂

    As you can see in the post, this is even allowed in some states in the US, but obviously no car has this kind of lights. And like I said in the start of the post… with cars that drive themselves “just around the corner” I don’t think anyone will put in the effort.

Unburied Digital Dreams of L.A.T.S. Concept

There is a video from models too large to post here now that has a whole reel of laser imaging footage from which brief clips may be isolated to be to be someday interjected into appropriate segments of future work chronicling the evolution of the Linear-Arc Tracking Suspension (LATS) Concept for a vehicle which may more equally distribute the coefficient of inertial friction exerted onto the pavement between four tires, the one in the back being an ‘outboard-like’ unit of drive tire with transaxle to motor connected to movable framework of parallel mounting framework running to similar front tire unit having double universal-joint reaching over to the fork which provides pitch/yaw matching but exceeding the angle the rear tire’s angle of attack to the pavement from front to rear with this front fork  connection being adjusted using a small steering wheel to the left side of the body just above the left arm-rest,  as these to tires may be tracked from left to right opposite the cockpit’s movement from left to right  being controlled by a joystick just above the right armrest, able to be pulled back for braking, but when toggled from left to right turns the two middle cockpit tires left and right moving the concept vehicle in-motion into turns lining-up the front and rear tire to the outside of the curve, having three tires on one side with one on the other in the curve, leaning the concept vehicle into turns naturally like riding a bicycle with no-hands, turning a motorboat, or an airplane so-to-speak, then coming out of the turn, able to move the joystick forward for accelerating out of the curve, using right hand on it to toggle left or right to adjust these cockpit middle tires to move the body of the concept vehicle back across towards the straight road as the front and rear tires adjust to being in middle position to center-line of cockpit directly in front and rear, tweaked with a little control of the front forks by the left hand on the steering wheel.  UNDERSTAND..?
